The Answers You Need
What is the organization structure?
Pack 502 is a member of the cub scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America. Our council is the Coastal Carolina Council. The council is divided into six districts. We are members of the Etiwan District.
What is a Pack?
Each district contains many “units” such as cub scouts packs and boy scouts troops, which deliver the scouting program directly to scouts and their families.
What is a Den?
Each pack is organized into “Dens” or groups of scouts by grade levels. The dens are as follows:
Lions—Kindergarten
Tigers—First Grade
Wolves—Second Grade
Bears—Third Grade
Webelos—Fourth Grade
Webelos II/Arrows of Light—Fifth Grade
How often are scout meetings?
Den meetings are typically held in the afternoon every other Sunday at the All Saints Lutheran Church Kesner Center. Den meetings are where your scout will be completing the majority of their activities and adventures to obtain their rank.
Pack meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 6:00-7:00 at the All Saints Lutheran Church Kesner Center. Pack meetings give scouts the opportunity to participate together, be recognized for completing their requirements and to conduct pack business.
Will there be campouts?
Yes! We have two- three campouts per year, one in the fall (October), one in the winter (December) and one in the spring (February or March). Activities are held on Saturday with lunch and dinner provided. We camp out on Saturday night. Additionally, the Coastal Carolina Council holds several campouts throughout the year, which are announced as they set their dates.
Where are camp outs held?
There are several locations in the Lowcountry. The Coastal Carolina Council has Camp Ho Nan Wah on Wadmalaw Island as well as Camp Moultrie located just outside Moncks Corner. We also have access to Buck Hall in Awendaw.
Are the any other events?
Every year, scouts participate in the Raingutter Regatta and the Pinewood Derby. These activities include building a boat or car and then participating in races. The Raingutter Regatta occurs at our fall campout. The Pinewood Derby is on a Saturday in February.
We also have a blue and gold banquet which is our annual awards banquet. This event is usually held in April.
Do the Cub scouts participate in community service?
We plan several service projects each year. A scouting favorite is our cookie decorating day in which we come together to decorate cookies in December. These cookies are then given to the Meals on Wheels program for distribution.
What is required uniform for my child?
We have a “Class A” uniform which should be worn to most meetings. Lions through Bears wear the navy blue uniform. Webelos and Arrows of Light wear the Khaki/Olive Green uniform. New uniforms can be ordered online or purchased at the Scout Store. Each grade level has a different color hat, neckerchief and neckerchief slide to help differentiate the dens. Details on the elements of the uniform can be found online at www.scouting.org/programs/cub-scouts/cub-scout-uniform or in your child’s handbook. Whether purchasing new or used, be sure to get the numbers “5”, “0” and “2” and the Coastal Carolina Patch to sew onto the uniform sleeve.
Additionally, we have a “Class B” uniform, which is the pack T-shirt.
Each Scout will need to have their own handbook, which outlines the list of the adventures required, plus many electives for the Scout to earn their rank for the year.
There are opportunities for used uniforms which be found online and via Facebook parents resale groups.
